Truly one of the luxuries of the scent world, frankincense is non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and a nonirritant native to northeast Africa. The heady, fragrant Boswellia frereana is the workhorse of the species. Used as incense in Asia and the Middle East since ancient times, it was called upon it as a tonic for rheumatism, skin diseases, nervous disorders and in ancient Egypt it was used as a rejuvenating face mask. Now found in an array of colognes, soaps, and pharmaceuticals, frankincense is sought to support inflammation and as a calming and mood-lifting agent.
