Grocery shopping may seem mundane and simple. But it can help or hurt your diet and fitness progress if you make the wrong choices. Consider following these simple tips to learn how to grocery shop efficiently and healthily.

1. Eat a healthy meal before you go

Eating before you shop will save you from purchasing more than you expected, or purchasing some unhealthy snacks to eat on the drive home.

2. Shop the Perimeter

The perimeter of the store will have fresh produce only. The inner aisles of the grocery store tend to have empty calories and high-calorie junk food, like cookies or chips. So staying out of those aisles will reduce temptations.

3. Read food labels

Labels are organized with ingredients from the highest amount to the lowest amount. So if you see high fructose corn syrup as the first ingredient, then you know that it is a high sugar product. You can also see calories, calories from fat, sugars, and carbohydrates, as well as much more information.

4. Stick to your list!

If you make a grocery list and plan to buy ingredients to make your weekly meals, you will be less likely to buy things you don’t need. If it’s not on the list, you don’t need it!

5. Buy Local

Local options like farmers’ markets are a great way to incorporate in-season produce into your diet. Local produce has spent less time in transit, and its nutritional content has likely not decreased. Also, supporting local businesses and the local economy is a plus!
